2007-08 After-School Activities

4th and final session of YMCA programs, 4-17-08 through 5-22-08

All after-school programs at KPMS take place from 2:45 – 4:30 P.M. every Tuesday and Thursday that school is in session on a regular-day schedule [Check the District web site for weather-related cancellation of after-school activities]. 

A schedule of programs is listed below.  Academic support programs are offered at no cost; the cost of YMCA Enrichment Programs is $4.00* per week, which can be paid in full at the time of sign up, or on a weekly, drop-in basis. [*Fee adjustments or waivers are available based on need, call Terry 253-534-7833].

 All students participating in the following after-school activities are given a snack and can ride the activity bus home at no additional cost.  Activity bus routes are listed at the bottom of this page and printed on the back of sign-up forms.  [If you need to contact someone regarding a transportation matter after 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday or Thursday, call Julie Kriese at Evergreen School, 253-530-1300]

TUESDAYS

After School Academy –  [Academic]

Comprised of three parts:  Students can independently stay after school and go to the After School Academy to work on homework, provided they have written parent permission; teachers can make arrangements with parents for student who are missing homework to stay after school and attend ASA to complete work; students are assigned by counselors on a semi-permanent basis and supported by weekly input from teachers.  Program meets two days per week, Tuesday and Thursday. 6th Grade Math Tutoring – [Academic]                                                                                       

   Teacher/counselor recommended 6th grade students are provided tutoring to help increase critical math skills in support of current classroom instruction, homework and WASL preparation. 7th Grade Math Tutoring – [Academic]

Teacher/counselor recommended 7th grade students are provided tutoring to help increase critical math skills in support of current classroom instruction, homework and WASL preparation. No charge                        Mrs. Lewellen, Instructor

8th Grade Math Mentoring – [Academic]                                                                                    

In partnership with Communities in Schools of Peninsula, the program is designed to increase critical mathematical skills and competence in support of classroom instruction and homework.  Students may self-enroll, or participation is based on teacher/counselor recommendation; mentoring is provided by trained community members. No charge                                  C.I.S.P. KPMS Amigos – [Enrichment]                                                                                                   

  In partnership with children’s Home Society, students are provided supervised games and activities as well as homework assistance.  The program coordinator is assisted by well-screened high school mentors who work cooperatively to build relationships and model appropriate social skills.  The program goal is to enhance the confidence and self image of all students involved in the program, as well as prepare interested middle school students to eventually take on mentoring roles. YMCA Programs – [Enrichment] . . . 4th SESSION, 4/17/08 through 5/22/08

THIRD SESSION, the YMCA will offer:

  • COOKING - Learn to cook recipes you will enjoy and be creative in the process.  In each class students will complete a cooking project and enjoy sampling the finished product.

  • QUILTING - So you think sewing is a thing of the past?  Think again!  Now’s your chance to learn how to put together your own unique blanket for those movie nights, cold evenings around the campfire, or to hang on your wall!  Finish the session with your own quilt, revealing your creativity and personality.

  • SIGN LANGUAGE CLUB . . . Did you know that American Sign Language can be taken as a foreign language in high school AND that at Peninsula High School you can receive college credits by taking American Sign Language???  Have fun and get a head start on high school, join the KPMS Sign Language Club, which runs March 6th through May 29th. 

YMCA classes are $24.00 for a six-week session, or $4.00 per week.  Students enrolled in an academic program on Tuesday have the opportunity to attend a YMCA class on Thursday for no charge.                                                                                                                 Ms. Whitney Fry, Site Coordinator
